Vice-President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria from Luanda, Angola, after participating in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).

Stanley Nkwocha, the vice president’s spokesperson, announced this in a statement on Monday, adding that Mr Shettima represented President Bola Tinubu at the summit in Luanda.

“VP Shettima represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu @officialABAT at the high-level summit, where Nigeria called for stronger African-led mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, as well as urgent continental action against recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks on Africans and other nationals in South Africa,” he said.

He said the country also backed the Luanda Action Plan during the summit in Angola, particularly for sustainable financing of Africa’s peace and security architecture among AU members.

“At the summit, Nigeria also backed the Luanda Action Plan and called for sustainable financing of Africa’s peace and security architecture, stronger collective responsibility among AU member states and greater African ownership of solutions to conflicts on the continent,” he noted.

The Peoples Gazette earlier reported that the vice president jetted out to Luanda to attend the African Union summit, where he condemned continued xenophobic attacks against other African nationals in South Africa.

Mr Nkwocha added that Mr Shettima returned to Abuja after concluding his engagements in Angola.
