Afreximbank appoints senior executives to strengthen regional operations

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced senior leadership appointments to strengthen its regional operations.
According to the bank, the move also aims to deepen client engagement and enhance delivery of its mandate across Africa and the Caribbean.
The bank announced this in a statement issued by Vincent Musumba, Afreximbank’s communication and events manager in Abuja, on Monday.
Mr Musumba said the appointments were part of its growth ambitions and efforts to accelerate intra-African trade, industrialisation and regional integration.
He said the appointments would strengthen leadership across its regional platforms, expand market coverage, improve transaction execution and deepen engagement with clients and stakeholders.
Mr Musumba said most appointees had progressed from within the institution, bringing institutional knowledge, established client relationships and an understanding of its strategic priorities.
He said the continuity would support faster execution, greater responsiveness to market needs and the delivery of its growth, trade and development objectives across Africa and the Caribbean.
Mr Musumba said the appointments include Eric Monchu, who was appointed group managing director, client relations and regional operations, based in Cairo, after serving in the position in an acting capacity.
He said in the new role, Mr Monchu would lead the bank’s client relations and regional operations functions, with responsibility for strengthening coordination among business development, client coverage and transaction execution.
Kudakwashe Matereke has been appointed director, regional operations, Anglophone West Africa, based in Abuja, Nigeria.
“Matereke previously served as Director, Regional Operations, East Africa.
“He brings experience in trade finance, business development and client relationship management to bear in the new role, where he will oversee regional business development, client coverage and stakeholder engagement,” Mr Musumba said.
Humphrey Nwugo had been appointed director, regional operations, Eastern Africa, based in Kampala, Uganda.
He said Mr Nwugo previously held a similar regional operations role in Southern Africa and had experience in banking operations, syndications, corporate finance and regional execution.
“He will oversee the bank’s regional operations, market coverage and client engagement in Eastern Africa,” he added.
Others include Peter Olowononi, who was appointed director, regional operations, Southern Africa, in Harare, Zimbabwe.
“Before his appointment, Olowononi served as director, client relations, Anglophone West Africa.
“He brings experience in client coverage, transaction origination and regional business development to bear in his new role, where he will lead the bank’s operations and strategic engagement across Southern Africa,” he added.
Mr Musumba said in the Caribbean, Roy Reid had been appointed chief operating officer, Caribbean office, Bridgetown, Barbados, effective July 15, 2026.
He said Mr Reid previously served as senior adviser at Jamaica’s Office of the Prime Minister.
“He has more than 20 years’ experience spanning government advisory, financial services, investment management, fintech and business development,” he said.
In his new capacity, he would support Afreximbank’s operations, regional coordination and stakeholder engagement across the Caribbean.
Meanwhile, George Elombi, the president and chairman of the board of directors of Afreximbank, was quoted as saying, “These appointments highlight the depth of leadership and professional talent within Afreximbank.
“It also highlights our commitment to placing experienced executives at the centre of executing the bank’s development mandate to change the structure of African trade.”
Mr Elombi said that each appointee brought valuable experience and knowledge of African and Caribbean markets.
“Above all, each shares a strong belief in the bank’s founding philosophy that Africa’s development destiny lies with Africans and that our collective mission is to restore the dignity of Africans,” he said.
He said the board of directors, management and staff of Afreximbank extend their congratulations to the five appointees and wish them success in their respective roles.
