Venice Film Festival begins with George Clooney honoured with lifetime achievement award

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival has opened in Venice, Italy, with U.S. actor George Clooney receiving the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement on Wednesday.
The actor was presented with the award at the festival’s opening ceremony at the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido in Venice, Italy, by actress Laura Dern, who also delivered a tribute to the veteran for his contributions to the industry as an actor, director and producer.
Over the years, the actor has maintained a long relationship with the festival, where several of his films have been presented.
The opening ceremony also featured the world premiere of Ink, directed by Danny Boyle. The event will run from September 2 to 12 on the Lido di Venezia.
U.S. filmmaker and actress Maggie Gyllenhaal will lead the jury alongside other prominent directors, producers and screenwriters, as 21 films compete for the prestigious Golden Lion award.
The festival was established to promote international cinema in all its forms and to preserve and restore classic films for younger audiences, helping them understand cinema history.
