Fenerbahçe midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been handed a four-match European ban and a £50,000 fine following his actions in a clash during Fenerbahçe’s Champions League playoff victory against Lyon. 

The French international will miss Fenerbahçe’s opening fixtures in the Champions League phase following his provocative actions towards the opposition players and spectators after the final whistle. 

The sanction on Guendouzi also carried a one-year probation.

Teammate Mason Guendouzi was also fined £30,000 and will be suspended for one game for violating basic rules of conduct. His suspension is also subject to a one-year probationary period.

Lyon’s goalkeeping coach, Antonio Ferreira, was also slammed a five-match ban on European games after he was caught up in the clash. He will also be placed under a probationary period of one year.

Fenerbahçe was fined a total of £95,000 on charges of throwing pyrotechnics and lighting, crowd disturbances, and violating the general and basic rules of conduct.

Similarly, Lyon was fined a total of £108,500 for throwing objects, lighting pyrotechnics, crowd disturbances, as well as violating the general and basic rules of conduct.

The sanctions follow after UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body opened disciplinary proceedings into the incident.

Fenerbahçe said they would appeal the case and follow up with the necessary procedures against the sanctions imposed.

“Our club is reviewing the decisions issued by UEFA and the grounds for those decisions through our legal department and will pursue the necessary appeal and objection procedures before the UEFA Appeals Body against the sanctions imposed,” the club stated.
