Liverpool secured their first victory of the new campaign, beating Ipswich Town 2-0 at Portman Road on Friday, courtesy of a brace from Alexander Isak.

The Reds opened the scoring in the sixth minute through a brilliant partnership between Cody Gakpo and Isak, with the Swedish striker making it 1-0.

Isak secured his second goal of the evening three minutes later, with Gakpo setting up the striker yet again to double the advantage.

Liverpool came close to increasing the lead after Dominic Szoboszlai was caught in an offside position, which ruled out a penalty opportunity.

Isak was close to completing a hat-trick, after his goal was ruled out after he was found offside.

The hosts tried to reduce the deficit but failed to utilise their chances in the final third.

Liverpool’s new winger, Bradley Barcola, who signed from PSG, also made his debut off the bench in the second half.

Iraola’s side host Atletico Madrid next Wednesday in their first fixture in the Champions League phase, while Ipswich travel on to face Crystal Palace next weekend.
