INEC will name an interim chair today as Mahmood Yakubu steps aside having completed his term.
President Buhari has nominated Mr. Yakubu for a second term but the Senate has not confirmed his nomination.
Mr. Yakubu began his first five-year term as INEC chair in November 2015, succeeding Attahiru Jega. Mr. Yakubu will be the first person to get a second term as INEC chair if the Senate approves his nomination.
INEC is led by a chair and 12 national commissioners – being two representatives from the six geopolitical zones. At the state level there are 37 resident electoral commissioners including one for Abuja.
Five of the 12 national commissioners have served two terms already and are not eligible for reappointment. This means one of these seven will be named interim chair today.
