The Nigeria Democratic Congress has condemned the blocking of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, from accessing the Yelwata community in Benue to visit victims of recent killings.

The party alleged that suspected thugs blocked Mr Obi’s convoy on Tuesday and prevented him from entering the community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.

In a statement by its spokesman, Osa Director, the NDC alleged that one of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s aides led the thugs.

NDC described the incident as troubling, saying Mr Obi’s planned visit was intended to enable him to mourn with affected families, offer solidarity and listen to victims.

According to the statement, Mr Obi said he arrived in Benue around 9:00 a.m. to visit victims and families affected by the killings in Yelwata.

He said thugs stopped his convoy, chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”

Mr Obi said he visited Benue “not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity”.

The NDC said Benue residents and Nigerians deserved to live peacefully, travel safely and farm without fear.

It also called on the Benue government and relevant security agencies to investigate the blockade, identify those responsible and ensure the safety of citizens and leaders visiting communities affected by violence.

NDC said it would continue to advocate the protection of life and the safety of Nigerians across the country.
