Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has pledged to strengthen measures to protect veterinary doctors and para-veterinary professionals from hazardous diseases associated with their duties.

Mr Fintiri made the pledge when the leadership of the Veterinary Doctors Association of Nigeria (VDAN), Adamawa State branch, paid him a courtesy visit on Thursday in Yola.

The governor said his administration recognised the critical role veterinary professionals played in developing the livestock sector and strengthening the state’s agricultural economy.

He stated that the government was committed to creating an enabling environment for veterinarians to effectively contribute to livestock production, animal health and public health.

Mr Fintiri recalled the death of a veterinary doctor, identified as Moses, in Yola several years ago after reportedly contracting brucellosis in the course of his duties.

He said the incident underscored the occupational hazards faced by veterinary professionals and the need for government to provide adequate protection and support.

The governor said his administration had also repositioned cattle markets and abattoirs across the state to improve livestock production, meat processing and public health.

According to him, efforts were ongoing to complete one of the largest cattle markets in Africa in Adamawa State to further boost livestock activities.

He said the project would create employment opportunities, expand livestock activities and increase the scope of work available to veterinary professionals across the state.

On the association’s request for improved allowances, Mr Fintiri said the demand was clear and would be carefully studied to determine appropriate government action.

He assured the veterinary professionals that his administration would provide whatever was due to them within the provisions of government policy.

Earlier, the state chairman of VDAN, Kiliyobas Caleb, said the delegation visited Government House to appreciate Mr Fintiri for his support and contributions to livestock development.

Mr Caleb commended the governor for rehabilitating abattoirs, improving meat production and strengthening measures aimed at protecting public health across the state.

He also appreciated the appointment of association members to key positions in the state government, including two permanent secretary positions and that of chief of staff.

The chairman further commended the recent employment of 19 veterinary doctors and more than 50 para-veterinary professionals into the ministry of livestock.

He described livestock as a major contributor to the state’s economy, emphasising that veterinarians played vital roles in animal health, disease surveillance and control.

Mr Caleb said veterinary professionals were particularly important in preventing and controlling zoonotic diseases such as tuberculosis, rabies and avian influenza, among others.

He assured the governor of the association’s continued support and commitment to the success of his administration and development of the livestock sector.
