The Nigeria Correctional Service, in collaboration with the Initiative for Safeguarding Happiness, Innocence, Wellbeing, Love and Dignity (I’SHIELD), has sensitised inmates to moral values and character development.

The sensitisation programme was conducted at three major custodial centres in the state (Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kurmawa; Medium Security Custodial Centre, Goron Dutse; and Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Janguza), according to a statement by NCoS spokesman Musbahu Lawan, on Friday.

I’SHIELD’s executive director, Muzammil Sani-Kurawa, said the programme was aimed at supporting rehabilitation, positive behavioural change, responsible decision-making, and peaceful coexistence among inmates.

He said the sessions, which included male and female inmates at Goron Dutse, were facilitated with the ‘21 Moral Precepts: Common Sense Guide to Better Living’ booklets and other educational materials provided by The Way to Happiness Foundation.

He encouraged the participants to reflect on their past choices and use their time in custody for self-development, character building, and preparation for responsible living after release.

Mr Sani-Kurawa urged the inmates to utilise the knowledge and values they acquired through the programme.

“Let what you have learned become a foundation for positive change so that upon your release, you can return to society as productive, responsible, and law-abiding members of your communities,” he urged.

He reaffirmed I’SHIELD’s commitment to supporting rehabilitation, human dignity, responsible citizenship, and positive character development through value-based education and constructive engagement.

The controller of corrections, Kano command, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, commended I’SHIELD for complementing NCoS efforts toward the reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of persons in custodial centres.

Mr Yusuf-Lakpene urged the inmates to take full advantage of such programmes and prepare themselves for meaningful and law-abiding lives beyond custody.

He said the initiative would contribute to promoting positive values, personal responsibility, peaceful coexistence, and safer communities.
