About 36 suspects have been arrested after a police officer was attacked and lynched by a mob at Gindabour in the Sawla district of the Savannah region of Ghana.  

The regional police commander for Ghana police service, David Amoxko, stated this in a statement on Thursday.

He noted that the deceased cop was attacked on Wednesday along Ginabour to Kenkyen community road.

“A motorbike rider who was approaching their location immediately diverted into the bush when he saw the police vehicle,” he said.

Mr Amoxko stated that the police team became suspicious and decided to follow up from a different direction but found the rider unconscious on the bushy road. 

“The officers picked up the man and were conveying him to a hospital when he died on the way. Following news of his death, a mob from the community attacked the officers resulting in the death of General Constable Redeemer Owusu,” he noted.

He said that other officers sustained varying degrees of injury and the police vehicle was also damaged.

“The bodies of both the deceased officer and the rider have been conveyed to the Damongo Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

“Following the incident, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has deployed a team of investigators and intelligence officers to assist with investigations and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the statement added. 

He noted that reinforcement teams from Damongo, Bole, Sawla, Tuna and Kalba, and the regional intelligence team were on the ground to beef up security and maintain law and order.

“All 36 suspects are in police custody, assisting investigations and will be put before the court,” he said.

He noted that the command condemned the attack on its officers and would ensure that the perpetrators faced the full wrath of the law.
