The Kwara State fire service says it recovered the body of a 52-year-old man, Alaba Ayeni, who drowned in a domestic well beside Lamp Bearers Islamic School, off Asa-Dam Road, Ilorin.

A statement on Tuesday by the spokesman for the agency, Hassan Adekunle, said the body of the deceased was found on Tuesday, after responding to an emergency that a man was found inside a domestic well.

He said, “The Fire Service received the distress call and turned it out at 08:42hrs. On arrival, our firefighters commenced a recovery operation and successfully recovered the body of the deceased, identified as Alaba Ayeni, aged 52.”

He stated that based on the information gathered during the operation, children in the community discovered that the man was inside the domestic well and immediately reported the situation to elders in the vicinity. 

Mr Adekunle noted that the location was also said to be close to the residence of the deceased.

“After the recovery operation, the body was formally handed over to DPO Bolaji of Budo-Nuhu Police Station, Nigeria Police Force, for further necessary action,” he added.

The chief fire officer, Alabi Muhammed, expressed concern over the incident and urged residents to ensure that domestic wells and other open water sources within residential areas were properly secured and covered to prevent accidents.

He also advised parents, guardians and community leaders to ensure that children were not allowed to move around unattended near wells, drainage channels and other potentially hazardous areas.
