Ethiopia is modernising its coffee industry to become the world’s largest producer of arabica coffee. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said Ethiopia, the birthplace of this variety, should become its leading producer, according to TV BRICS.

To implement this plan, the government will attract investment in modern irrigation and coffee processing systems.

Ethiopian coffee contributes significantly to the country’s development through foreign currency earnings and large-scale initiatives.

The measures aim to increase productivity and achieve substantial annual growth in coffee production.

Irrigation systems and mechanised harvesting have improved product quality while also making work easier for farmers.

Coffee producers and exporters note that maintaining high product quality and increasing productivity are key to strengthening competitiveness in the global market.

Ethiopia’s coffee industry and higher product standards have led to a sharp increase in demand, particularly for speciality coffee varieties.

Earlier, coffee from the Guji highland region in southern Ethiopia was sold for a record amount at an online auction.

One kilogramme was sold for $2,376.
