Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged Nigerians to see the country as a shared inheritance and work collectively to build a peaceful, prosperous and just nation.

Mr Abiodun made the call on Sunday at a Special Interdenominational Church Service held at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, Ake, Abeokuta, to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The governor who was represented by his Deputy, Noimot Salako-Oyedele, noted that citizens have a responsibility to future generations in preserving the unity and progress of the country.

He urged Nigerians to look beyond the current challenges and focus on opportunities for national development.

He stated, “When we speak about development, we must also speak about the values that hold society together. Government cannot build a prosperous society alone. There is a need for citizens to work hand-in-hand with the government to build a robust nation.”

Mr Abiodun commended the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government for its economic reforms under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He expressed optimism that the reforms would translate into improved infrastructure, better livelihoods and increased economic opportunities for Nigerians.

The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding economic programmes, strengthening public institutions and investing in human capital before the end of his tenure.

He said, “The true measure of governance is not simply the projects commissioned, but the lives improved and opportunities created.”

Mr Abiodun urged political leaders and religious bodies to promote peace, mutual respect and responsible civic engagement as the country approaches another election season.

He said political differences should not be allowed to undermine national unity or peaceful coexistence.

“We can disagree without becoming enemies, compete without violence and defend our convictions while respecting the rights of others,” he said.

In his sermon titled, “A Call to Repentance,” taken from Joel 2:12-14, the Archbishop of Lagos and Bishop of Remo, Most Rev. Dr. Michael Fape, urged Nigerians to humble themselves, shun corruption and seek God’s guidance.

Mr Fape identified greed as a major driver of corruption, warning against attempts to disguise corrupt practices using public relations.

“Nigeria is not where it should be today because infrastructural decay persists, health and tertiary institutions struggle, and businesses have folded up.

“However, we must thank God that incidents of banditry and kidnapping have reduced,” he said.

The cleric commended Mr Abiodun’s administration for its developmental strides in Ogun State and urged residents to reject politics of hatred in favour of peace and unity.

He prayed for Nigeria, Ogun State, executive arm of government, and traditional institutions.
