U.S. Supreme Court gives nod to Trump govt to restart third-country deportation of migrants

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that President Donald Trump’s government can deport migrants to countries other than their home countries.
The Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in favour of Mr Trump’s deportation of immigrants to third countries halts an earlier appeals court ruling, pending a hearing on the policy in December.
The ruling allows Trump’s government to put on hold an earlier ruling by Boston-based U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy declaring the Department of Homeland Security’s policy to deport migrants to countries other than their home country as unlawful.
Judge Murphy’s ruling followed a class-action lawsuit filed by immigrant rights groups on behalf of migrants opposing the U.S. government’s deportation of migrants to other countries without notice and consideration for the harms they could suffer.
So far, the Trump administration has deported over 25,000 migrants to 29 countries under the policy since last year amid a crackdown on immigration.
The U.S. government entered into agreements with some African countries, including South Sudan, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea, Liberia, the Central African Republic, and other nations, to accept its deportees.
Independent UN human rights experts have warned that the U.S. policy of sending migrants and asylum seekers to third countries is exposing people to torture, persecution and enforced disappearance.
