The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, has called for early security preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.

Oluseyi Babeseyi, the command’s spokesperson, in a statement in Abeokuta on Tuesday, said Mr Ojajuni gave the advice on the first day of a two-day stakeholders’ workshop on “Elections, Security, the Law, Stakeholders and the Media”

“Election security is not an election-day assignment,” Mr Ojajuni said.

He called for early preparation, professionalism, political neutrality, effective intelligence sharing, respect for fundamental rights and coordinated engagement among stakeholders.

He assured that the command is ready to deploy personnel and resources professionally to maintain a safe, secure and peaceful environment throughout the electoral cycle.

The workshop, organised in collaboration with the Development Communication Research Centre Limited, was formally opened by Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by his Special Adviser on Security, Sola Subair.

In his speech, Mr Abiodun emphasised the collective responsibility of security agencies, electoral institutions, political parties, the media, and other stakeholders to preserve electoral peace and protect the integrity of the democratic process.

Other key stakeholders in attendance were deputy commissioners of police, assistant commissioners of police, all 16 area commanders and their respective divisional police officers, squadron and tactical commanders.

Also present were officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Amotekun Corps, So-Safe Corps, Vigilante groups, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Nigeria Customs Service, Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), political parties, media organisations and civil society groups, among others.

The workshop continues on Wednesday, with further sessions on election security, stakeholder responsibilities, community engagement, media relations and contemporary social media management.
