Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has called on Nigerians to remain united amid current challenges, regardless of religious or ethnic differences.

Mr Makinde made the call on Thursday during the 66th Independence anniversary celebration held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal, urged the citizens to appreciate the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding heroes.

Mr Makinde noted that Nigeria’s independence in 1960 was earned through the sacrifices and relentless struggles of the nation’s founding fathers.

He stressed that the freedom enjoyed today is a product of their labour and should inspire every citizen to be responsible and committed to nation-building.

The governor added that the anniversary offers an opportunity for sober reflection on the challenges confronting both Nigeria and Oyo State.

He emphasised that unity remains non-negotiable for Nigeria’s progress.

“With over 250 ethnic groups living together as one corporate entity, the nation’s diversity should be a source of strength rather than division”, he stated.

Mr Makinde therefore urged Nigerians to cultivate the ability to stay united.

“As we reflect on our nation’s journey since 1960, we must acknowledge the challenges we face in all ramifications.

“As a state, we also have our own challenges in Oyo State. This day calls for sober reflection on the issues confronting us at both the national and state levels.

“But we must also appreciate that independence teaches us, at both national and state levels, how to govern ourselves, and we cannot govern ourselves without upholding the rule of law and the tenets of democracy,” the governor said.

Mr Makinde said the state has recorded remarkable progress across all sectors, including education, security, sports, the economy, and infrastructure.

He appreciated the people of the state for their cooperation and support, which he said has enabled the government to achieve its set goals.

The theme of the 66th independence anniversary is “Dealing Decisively with Insecurity, Banditry and Terrorism Through Community Participation, Awareness and Policing”.

Highlights of the celebration were a march past, cultural displays, and the presentation of prizes.
