Brazil targets over 80% renewable energy share by 2055

Brazil is targeting more than 80 per cent of renewable energy in its energy mix by 2055, alongside plans to double energy production.
The target is part of a long-term energy plan designed to guide the country’s infrastructure, production and consumption decisions over the next three decades.
Brazil’s Energy Research Office prepared the plan under the supervision of the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
It projects that clean energy sources will account for 97 to 99 per cent of electricity generation by 2055, up from 96 per cent in 2025.
According to the plan, continued investment in wind and solar power will drive much of the growth in clean electricity generation.
The strategy is also designed to meet rapidly rising electricity demand, which could increase more than fourfold by 2055 as economic activity expands and new forms of energy consumption emerge.
To accommodate the projected growth, Brazil plans to modernise its electricity infrastructure, with the transmission network expected to triple in length.
The capacity of transformer substations will also be expanded as part of the infrastructure upgrade.
Biofuel production is projected to increase fivefold during the period, making it another major component of the country’s energy transition.
Natural gas, however, is expected to maintain a strategic role as an operational reserve, providing flexibility and reliability as renewable energy penetration increases.
Energy efficiency will also be used as a major tool for reducing consumption and improving savings.
The plan estimates that improvements in energy use systems could save more than 25 per cent of the energy expected to be consumed in 2055.
