Ondo high chief shot dead during colleague’s traditional funeral rites

Tragedy struck during a funeral ceremony in Ayeka, a town in the Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, following the sudden shooting of a traditional high chief on Monday.
It was learnt that the incident occurred while the deceased’s colleagues were performing traditional funeral rites for him.
The situation degenerated when a yet-to-be-identified person suddenly discharged a firearm, and the bullet hit the high chief in the head, resulting in instant death.
A video of the incident showed the traditional chiefs lined up for the rites before one of them was killed.
Some locals present at the ceremony said the incident resulted from an accidental discharge.
When contacted for comment on Tuesday, police spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh said one suspect had been arrested.
Mr Jimoh added that the public will be updated in due course.
“Investigation is ongoing. For now, one person has been arrested. Updates will be shared on the incident in due course,” he said.
The latest incident adds to several cases of accidental discharge across the country.
