Two suspects arrested over machete attacks in Uyo

The police said weapons and stolen items were recovered from the suspects.

The police command in Akwa Ibom State says it arrested two suspects over machete attacks and robberies targeting women in Uyo. 

A statement on Thursday by the command’s spokesperson, Timfon John, said weapons and stolen items were recovered from the suspects.

She said the suspect, Wisdom Effiong, a native of Odukpani Local Government Area, Cross River State, and a resident of Ikot Okubo Village in Uyo Local Government Area, was arrested in connection with the alleged attacks.

“During the course of investigation, the police also arrested Yakub Abdullah ‘M’ of Udi Street, Uyo, who is alleged to have received some of the items reportedly stolen during the attacks,” Ms John said.

The police said preliminary investigation indicated that the stolen items were handed over to him by the machete attack suspect.

According to her, items recovered from the suspect included one machete, a woman’s handbag, one Tecno Pop 5 Android phone, one iPhone 11, one Redmi Android phone and three power banks.

She stated that seven women identified Mr Effiong as the person who allegedly attacked and robbed them, while the investigation is ongoing to establish the full extent of his involvement and identify other possible victims or accomplices.

“The suspects remain in police custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion ofinvestigation,” she said.
