Police disrupt Nigerian wedding in Netherlands over alleged noise pollution

Police on Sunday interrupted a Nigerian jollof wedding celebration in The Netherlands over noise complaints.
A footage of the incident reviewed by Peoples Gazette captured police officers in yellow vests entering a hall decorated for the event during what appeared to be in the middle of the ceremony.
Guests were seen dressed in formal and traditional Nigerian attire, including stunning headgears, sequined gowns, suits and others.
They were seen being directed out of the venue, with some looking distressed.
Others were seen protesting as police continued to manage the crowd.

A voice in the background stated, “It is because we are blacks; you’re treating us like animals. I still believe it’s because of our skin colour. This is not nice. This is intimidation. You can’t just spoil a party like that. This is not nice. This is someone’s wedding; you don’t have to stop it like that.”
The development raised questions about the treatment of Africans, including Nigerians in foreign countries.
Events are most times restricted in the Netherlands due to noise, traffic disruption, or permit violation, as municipalities in the country enforce strict noise ordinances, especially for loud music or celebrations after evening hours.
In most cases, hosts are expected to get permits with clear time limits.
The latest incident suggests that the event might have exceeded the agreed booking time or failed to meet local event regulations.
The development also generated reactions online. While some stressed the need for event hosts to respect laws in the country, others condemned the interruption by the police.
“You cannot keep partying at night when people are sleeping. Allow the party in a place that allows you to be noisy without bothering others,” said sultanhazard.
Another commenter lord_plaga wrote, “You are in a foreign country. Respect their laws and cultures. Don’t just make noise everywhere you go.”
“If you were being loud around residential area after 11, they have the right to shut you down,” said chronic_betch.
Misboombastic stated, “They could have told them to keep the noise down and perhap ask when the party would be over? I do question if the police would have been called if they were white.”
“I actually don’t understand why they interrupted the party. The hall is in a park area and people barely live around the place,” iadoreangiee commented.
