NDLEA arrests 108 suspects, seizes 1.8 tonnes of illicit drugs in Kaduna

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kaduna State arrested 108 suspects and seized 1,897.907 kilogrammes of illicit drugs during operations in September.
The command said it also secured the conviction of 12 suspects and dismantled 40 drug joints across the state within the period under review.
The command’s spokesperson, Sani Garba, said in a statement on Monday that the seizures comprised cannabis sativa, tramadol, cocaine, crystal methamphetamine and other psychotropic substances.
He said cannabis sativa accounted for the largest quantity, with 1,874.843 kilogrammes seized during the operations.
Other substances recovered included 20.749 kilogrammes of tramadol, 0.007 kilogrammes of cocaine, 0.039 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine and 2.269 kilogrammes of other psychotropic substances.
According to him, the operations were conducted at various locations across the state as part of the agency’s efforts to curb drug abuse, illicit dealing and trafficking.
He said the command had also intensified efforts to dismantle drug distribution networks through the closure of 40 drug joints.
Mr Garba added that 12 suspects were convicted and sentenced to various jail terms, while 10 others had been charged to court. He said investigations into other cases were ongoing.
The NDLEA official said the command was also implementing non-kinetic strategies to reduce the demand for illicit drugs through public sensitisation campaigns, counselling and rehabilitation services for people affected by drug abuse.
He said the initiatives were aimed at educating residents on the dangers of drug abuse and supporting efforts to address substance dependence.
The NDLEA state commander, Maijama’a Muhammad, commended officers and men of the command for their diligence and professionalism.
Mr Muhammad also appreciated stakeholders and residents of Kaduna for their support and cooperation, which he said contributed to the achievements recorded.
He called for sustained public support and collaboration to strengthen the fight against illicit drugs in the state.
