INEC says 56 female candidates registered for Enugu House of Assembly election

Fifty-six female candidates, representing 20 per cent of 286 candidates, made the Independent National Electoral Commission final list for the Enugu State House of Assembly election.
The Enugu State House of Assembly has 24 members representing the state constituencies.
The INEC displayed the final list on Monday at the Enugu headquarters of INEC, as well as in various INEC council offices.
The document contained the personal credentials of all 286 candidates contesting the state assembly positions.
The list indicated that 15 political parties fielded candidates for the assembly positions.
The political parties include the All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party, the Nigeria Democratic Congress, the African Democratic Congress and the New Nigeria Peoples Party.
Others are the Democratic Leadership Alliance, Young Progressives Party, Action Peoples Party, Zenith Labour Party, and Social Democratic Party.
The rest are Action Democratic Party, Allied Peoples Movement, Action Alliance, National Rescue Movement and Labour Party.
The bulk of the candidacy slots or positions came from two political parties. According to the records, AA has 12 female candidates, and ADP has 10.
It has been observed that those pushing for more female political office holders are intensifying efforts to get relative parity between the number of male and female candidates contesting the assembly election.
However, the Enugu governorship race is a 16-candidate race, all males, with Governor Peter Mbah (APC), Uchenna Nnaji (PDP), and Chinyeaka Ohaa (NDC) leading the pack.
