Kano’s only female governorship candidate vows to tackle drug abuse

The only female governorship candidate in Kano, Furera Ahmad, has vowed to tackle the menace of drug abuse and thuggery in the state head-on if she emerges victorious at the forthcoming general election.
Ms Ahmad, who is contesting on the Because Of Our Tomorrow party platform, said this in an interview on Wednesday in Kano.
Ms Ahmad said that, as a mother, she knows where the shoe pinches and would proffer a solution to the menace. She detested the attitude of some politicians, allegedly engaging some youths in thuggery under the influence of drug abuse during the electioneering period.
“I will place priority on the plight of women, children and youths, especially on the issue of drug abuse and thuggery.
“We are mothers who are always close to the women and children. We give them proper upbringing. Most men don’t notice drug abuse or bad behaviour of their children early until it has gone too far.
“Based on this, we, the women, are encouraged to contest elections so that if we emerge victorious, we know how to tackle the menace head-on,” she said.
She expressed optimism about emerging victorious in the polls, noting that she is gaining support from women and others.
The candidate also urged Nigerians to shun vote buying, which deprives them of their right to vote for candidates of their choice.
Ms Ahmad further urged the electorate to vote for competent candidates and not based on political parties.
“We should shun vote buying and selling our votes because of spaghetti, rice, and tokens. We should not sell our franchise,” she urged.
She also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct credible elections and declare whoever wins the winner.
