Ethnic groups in Niger have showcased their rich cultural heritage at the second edition of ‘Rep Your Tribe’, an event aimed at promoting cultural diversity, unity and peaceful coexistence among communities.

The cultural exhibition featured displays by the Nupe, Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, Igbo, Kanuri and Kambari, alongside other ethnic groups. Participants entertained the audience with traditional music, colourful attire, dances and other performances reflecting the richness of their respective cultures.

Safiya Nasidi, the vice-chairman of Chanchaga council area and organiser of Rep Your Tribe, said the initiative provided an opportunity to celebrate cultural heritage, strengthen community relationships and create opportunities for young people to discover and develop their talents.

Ms Nasidi described cultural heritage as one of society’s greatest treasures, noting that indigenous languages, traditional music, dances, clothing, values and customs tell the stories of ancestors and remind people of their identities.

According to her, these traditions deserve to be celebrated, protected and passed on to future generations. She restated the importance of appreciating cultural differences in a society made up of people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

“Being proud of your tribe does not mean looking down on another. Rather, it means understanding your roots while respecting the roots of others,” she said.

Ms Nasidi encouraged artistes and other participants to use the event to showcase their talents, represent their cultures with pride, and promote positive messages. She added that the talents displayed at the event could create opportunities for young people beyond the stage and open doors to a brighter future.

The cultural celebration also gave young people a chance to learn about their roots while appreciating the traditions and customs of other communities. Through the various performances, participants showed that cultural diversity can serve as a bridge for mutual understanding, respect, and peaceful coexistence.

The presentation of awards and cash rewards further recognised participants’ efforts and encouraged them to continue developing and showcasing their cultural talents.

The second edition of Rep Your Tribe reaffirmed the importance of preserving cultural heritage, encouraging youth talent and promoting unity among the diverse ethnic groups in Niger.
