London’s Oxford Street becomes traffic-free

London’s iconic shopping street, Oxford Street, is going traffic-free as a phased pedestrianisation begins on Monday.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said the busy high street will be free of bicycles, buses, cars, and taxis, with more greenery and seating.
“Revitalising Oxford Street will help to super-charge regeneration, boosting jobs and economic growth in the capital and beyond as we continue building a greener, better, more prosperous London for everyone.
“Over the last couple of decades, it’s been in decline, I’d say managed decline. I’m not willing to stand by as shops leave this street, as jobs leave this street, and that’s why I’m really proud 1km of this street is traffic free,” Mr Khan stated.
The mayor, who expressed excitement about the development, said citizens will see more trees, seats, and public squares next year.
City officials said the revitalisation plan will create new opportunities for the famous street, which brings about $33 billion annually to London’s economy.
The pedestrianisation came years after Mr Khan advocated it since he became mayor in 2016.
The project was approved by the city in February 2026, with the first phase expected to cost £150 million to be funded by borrowing.
Mr Khan said Oxford Street attracts around half a million visitors every day, adding that many flagship stores, including House of Fraser and Topshop, had, however, shut in recent years.
