Senate approves nomination of Maupe Ogun-Yusuf, others as NHRC members

The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters has approved nomination of media professional, Maupe Ogun-Yusuf, and others as members of the National Human Rights Commission.
The approval was contained in the Senate order paper seen by Peoples Gazette on Wednesday.
The order stated, “That the Senate do receive and consider the report of the committee on Judiciary and Human Rights and Legal Matters on the confirmation of the nominations of the following persons for appointment as chairman and members of the National Human Rights Commission.”
While the commission is chaired by Salamatu Husseini Suleiman, members include Huwaila Muhammed Ibrahim, Edmund Chinonye Obiagwu, Ogunji Chidozie Kingsley and Oluwakemi Asiwaju-Okenyendo.
Other members are Adedeji Adekunle, Ayo Adewuyi, Mohammed Adelodun, Eze Anaba, Ms Ogun-Yusuf and Patient Patrick Udoh.
The approval came months after President Bola Tinubu nominated the individuals in April.
Mr Tinubu noted that the board’s reconstitution was aimed at strengthening the institutional capacity of the commission and enabling it to better deliver on its mandate of promoting and protecting human rights across the country.
