Four persons remanded in Ghana for rioting over festival cancellation

At least four persons have been remanded in police custody by Dambai Circuit Court over disturbances at Dwabrem, Worawora on Saturday in Ghana.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Ghanaian police said the suspects were remanded on Tuesday.
The suspects were identified as Kwame Aboagye Ahenkroa (55), Prince Asante (27), Daniel Wiafe (20) and Kwabena Nsimbo (22).
The police said the accused persons were to reappear before the court on November 17, 2026.
The police said, “The incident involved the burning of vehicle tyres and other acts of violence amid tensions surrounding the commencement of rites for the Akwantutenten Festival, reportedly over claims that a High Court injunction had been obtained to restrain the celebration.”
The statement added that a police team deployed to the scene, extinguished the fire and restored order.
“On 26/10/2026, the Oti Regional Security Council (REGSEC), at a meeting with representatives of the disputing families, directed all parties to seek redress through the appropriate courts and Houses of Chiefs,” it said.
It added that the council emphasised that the chieftaincy dispute must be resolved through lawful means and directed that persons arrested in connection with the disturbances be dealt with in accordance with the law.
