A 52-year-old man, Ibrahim Saani, has been arrested in Ghana for allegedly possessing 37 parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

The suspect was arrested at New York, near Airport Junction in Ghana on Sunday at about 7 p.m.

The spokesperson for the Tema Regional Police Command, Dede Dzakpasu, noted this in a statement on Wednesday.

She stated that the police team acted on intelligence and conducted an operation in the area where the suspect was arrested.

“The team retrieved a bag, which contained 37 parcels of compressed substances suspected to be Indian hemp and a crusher. He was subsequently escorted to the police station with the exhibits for further investigation,” she said.

According to her, preliminary investigations suggested that the suspect may have been involved in the distribution of suspected narcotic substances within New York and surrounding areas.

Ms Dzakpasu stated that intelligence indicated that the suspect allegedly feigned madness to conceal his suspected illicit activities.

“The substances will be forwarded for forensic examination to establish their nature and assist further investigations into the possible involvement of other persons,” she stated.

She added that the suspect and his accomplices, if any, would be arraigned before the court as soon as investigations were completed.
