The U.S. mission in Nigeria has issued a security alert warning Americans of increased crime in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Titled “Security Alert: October 28, 2026,” the alert cited two recent cases of armed robbery in Abuja and warned Americans to be security conscious.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja wishes to remind U.S. citizens that the State Department rates Nigeria CRITICAL for crime. The Embassy recently received two reports of armed robbery late at night in areas frequented by the expatriate community,” the U.S. Mission said.

Advising U.S. citizens in Nigeria, the U.S. Mission said, “Increasing your situational awareness, avoiding predictable routines, and reviewing general security precautions with your family reduces your chances of becoming a victim.

“Petty crime rates in Abuja historically increase in the period from November through January.”

It also offered security tips to Americans living in Nigeria, stating “Stay alert in public places and consider avoiding locations and venues frequented by Westerners and expatriates.  Be especially vigilant in parking lots, at entrance barriers and while walking to or entering your vehicle.

“Be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.

When you are out in town, do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry. Do not travel late at night and avoid traveling to locations that lack security guards, gated parking lots, or adequate lighting. Whenever possible, avoid traveling or exercising alone.”
