Bahrain’s Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa has died in the United States, the state media reported on Wednesday. He was 84.

“The Royal Court mourns His Royal Highness… who passed away this morning at Mayo Clinic Hospital in the United States of America,” the Bahrain News Agency reported. Additional details were not immediately provided.

He assumed power in Bahrain in 1970, a year before the country gained independence. He was amongst the few Arab leaders that survived the 2011 Arab Spring uprising.

The Gulf kingdom will undergo an official mourning for one week during which its national flag will be unfurled at half-mast, state media said. His body will be returned to the country from the U.S. for burial.
