Six teams to compete for ‘Independence Cup’

No fewer than six teams will be featuring in two sporting events in Kwara to mark this year’s independence anniversary.
The teams are Kwara Internal Revenue Service (KWIRS), Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), First Bank Plc, and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
They will participate in the football and table tennis events which will start on Tuesday.
The programme coordinator tagged ‘Independent Cup’, Shogo Shodunke, revealed this on Sunday in Ilorin.
The preliminaries stages will be decided on September 30, while the final will be played on independence day, October 1, at the Indoor Hall of Kwara Stadium.
The competition aimed to celebrate Nigeria’s independence and emphasise the importance of freedom to people is organised by Phreestyle Sport Limited and supported by the Kwara State Sports Commission.
The brains behind Phreestyle Sport Limited, Shogo Shodunnke, said table tennis was added to this year’s edition for others who may not make the football team.
Mr Shodunnke added that the newly established sports commission under the chairmanship of Bola Mogaji had provided needed support to make the event memorable, just as he called on others who may want to partner with the concept.
KWIRS defeated their NMA to lift the maiden edition of the Independence Cup played in 2019.
