Amazon platform Twitch suffers data breach

Twitch says the infraction was caused by server configuration error.

• October 7, 2021

Twitch, a live streaming platform owned by Amazon, has suffered a data breach that has potentially exposed large swathes of the company’s information on the internet.

The data appeared to include Twitch’s internal code and documents, as well as the payments made to thousands of top streamers

“We have learned that some data was exposed to the internet due to an error in a Twitch server configuration change that was subsequently accessed by a malicious third party. Our teams are working with urgency to investigate the incident,” Twitch said in a blog post, “As the investigation is ongoing, we are still in the process of understanding the impact in detail. We understand that this situation raises concerns, and we want to address some of those here while our investigation continues.”

The leaked data includes source code for the company’s streaming service, an unreleased steam competitor from Amazon Game Studios, and details of creator payouts. Verge reported an anonymous post on a messaging board on Thursday, with a 125 GB torrent file which the poster claim contains the entirety of Twitch and its commit history.

Though personal information like creator payments have been included in the leak, passwords, addresses, or email accounts of Twitch users have been spared.

The livestreaming platform has asked its users to change their passwords as it is still working to understand what caused the leak and has observed that some users have been asked to change their passwords.
