Education authorities in Rivers have announced reopening of nursery and primary schools across the state.

Chidi Adiele, permanent secretary, ministry of education, said in a statement on Monday that Governor Nyesom Wike has approved return of students to school from November 23. This was in line with the school calendar published by the ministry of education in August 2020.

Peoples Gazette on November 12 reported how Mr. Wike’s failure to reopen nursery and primary schools had affected private school teachers whose income depends solely on school fees paid by parents.

Other states have since reopened nursery and primary schools months after they were shut down to reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Some private school teachers said since the shutdown of schools in the month of March, salaries have not been paid, making life difficult to survive amidst the pandemic.

During the pandemic, Mr. Wike has continued to pay public school teachers on time, Peoples Gazette understands. Mr. Adiele urged school administrators to take health precautions when students resume.
