The United States of America in partnership with the Lagos State Ministry of Education has completed a five-day training program for teachers in the state.

The “Global Air Drone Challenge for Teachers” programme saw fifty teachers from Lagos State’s Education District One complete the training program.

Organised by the U.S. consulate in Lagos, the workshop was led by instructors from the U.S. Global Air Drone Academy, according to a statement sent to Peoples Gazette.

Teachers were drawn from public schools in Agege, Alimosho and Ifako-Ijaiye, and were introduced to the basics of building and flying drones, computer coding, and solar panel assembly.

They were also introduced to various aspects of implementing an integrated approach to teaching Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in the classroom.

U.S. Consulate Public Affairs Officer Stephen Ibelli said the training offered new tools for teachers from public high schools to teach STEM subjects.

Speaking at the grand finale of the workshop held at the Government Senior College Agege, Mr Ibeli said the programme will help prepare Nigerian youth for the classroom of the future.

“The U.S. Mission in Nigeria is committed to supporting initiatives that promote STEM education in Nigeria. Technological knowledge is an essential element of the 21st-century economy, and it starts in the classroom.

“This teacher training workshop will boost teacher confidence and capabilities in the areas of STEM teaching and learning,” Mr Ibelli noted.

He noted that developing technological skills through STEM could spur Nigerian students to future careers in computer science, robotics and artificial intelligence.
