Footage from the CCTV submitted to the Lagos judicial panel of inquiry investigating the killing of unarmed protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate showed interference by state-owned Lekki Concession Company, lawyers to victims of the incident said on Saturday.
At the resumed hearing on Saturday, the panel started the footage from 4:00 p.m. on October 20, with lawyers to the #EndSARS protesters indicating that footage before the military came in was in default mode and rotating automatically.
The CCTV movement was later overridden by a staff of the company at 06:48 p.m., contradicting the claim by LCC that all staff left work before 4pm to observe the curfew.
From the footage, protest at the toll gate gained momentum with many coming into the venue as late as 06:12 p.m.
At 06:41 p.m. military vehicles were seen advancing to the toll gate corridor with protesters running away, which again contradicted the military’s claim that soldiers were stoned by protesters.
The footage also switched to black and white with low resolution, indicating a manual override of the CCTV output, #EndSARS lawyers said. Lawyers at the Lagos panel are still trying to determine the extent to which the CCTV was manipulated.
The footage was submitted three weeks ago by the managing director of LCC, Abayomi Omomuwansa, at the fourth sitting of the panel.
