Sustained onslaught on Nigerian troops by Boko Haram terrorists has yet again claimed the lives of six soldiers, with 27 injured in a recent ambush by the dreaded sect, Peoples Gazette can report.

Many soldiers are still missing in action following a successful attack by the terrorists, who engaged the servicemen in a gun battle on Saturday afternoon at the intersection between Jagiran and Mongunu towns in Borno State, military sources told the Gazette Sunday afternoon.

A bullet proof Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to Sector 3 commander of the army’s anti-terrorism combat squad, OPLD, was carted away by the assailants, our sources said.

Fearing that the insurgents may repaint the stolen SUV — which was coated in desert camouflage — in a bid to gain entrance into troops’ location, military authorities, our sources revealed, have warned all command posts to maintain a high level of vigilance.

An army spokesman did not return the Gazette’s request for comments on the latest attack.

Boko Haram has continued to ramp up its coordinated attacks on the Nigerian Army, smearing the military’s handling of the decade-long fight against insurgency in the Northeast.

The Gazette reported that a soldier was wounded on Tuesday when fighters of the notorious sect opened fire on officer cadets of the Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI) in Jaji, Kaduna State.

Lamenting a slack in personnel performance, which appeared to have emboldened the brutal sect, the Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai, in an internal memo seen by the Gazette, ordered troops on counter-insurgency operations to immediately tune themselves to war mode.
