Ondo: Crisis brewing as 9 Assemblymen reject deputy speaker’s impeachment

The last appear not to have been heard on the imbroglio going on at the Ondo State House of Assembly as nine Assemblymen have rejected the removal of Ogundeji Iroju as the deputy speaker.
Peoples Gazette on Monday reported that Mr. Ogundeji was removed during the plenary for alleged gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The members, via a letter to the speaker of the house described the impeachment as unconstitutional, saying it did not meet the required constitutional requirements for the impeachment of the deputy speaker.
They argued that for a speaker or a deputy speaker to be removed, two-third of house members must support it.
They also cited section 92 (2c) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and section 9 (1-ix ) of the standing order of the house which stipulate that all the members of the assembly must be present at the chamber for such removal to be effective.
Peoples Gazette understands that the lawmakers who are against Mr. Ogundeji’s impeachment are also standing against the impeachment of the deputy governor Agboola Ajayi.
They are Rasheed Elegbeleye, Suleiman Jamiu Maito, Adewale Williams-Adewinle, Festus Akingbaso, Ogundeji Iroju, Favour Tomomewo, and Tomide Akinribido. Others included Success Torrhukerhijo and Samuel Ademola.
Since the fallout between governor Rotimi Akeredolu and his deputy, with the latter contesting against him in the October 10 gubernatorial election, the state assembly has been divided into two factions.
