Sudan’s security forces have announced seizure of large amounts of weapons, ammunition and war equipment in the Kassala State on the eastern border with Ethiopia, official SUNA news agency reported.
“The weapons were seized as part of the operations carried out by the security forces these days on the border line in anticipation of any security threat,” it added.
The nation’s Rapid Support Forces reiterated readiness to deal with any actions that negatively affect the security and stability of the country.
The seized weapons included a number of mortars and various machine guns, said the report.
Since the ouster of former leader Omar Al-Bashir for war crimes, the Northern African nation has been on the vestiges of violence which threatens to tear it apart.
The ongoing uprising in neighbouring Ethiopia also presents fresh security challenges to Sudan’s fragile peace.
Earlier this month, Sudan’s Kassala state closed its border with neighboring Ethiopia because of rising tensions in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.
Acting governor of Kassala, Fathal-Rahman Al-Amin, said then, “we will not allow any group to enter Sudan and turn Sudanese territory into a battlefield.
“We will not allow anyone carrying guns to enter Kassala.”
