Trader sentenced to one year in prison for stealing plates, spoons

The Jos Chief Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a trader, Yasir Adam, to one-year imprisonment for stealing palm oil, one cartoon of pasta, a gas burner, a set of plates and spoons.

The chief magistrate, Joseph Chollom, sentenced Mr Adam after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Mr Chollom, however, gave the convict an option to pay a fine of N50,000.

The magistrate also ordered the convict to pay N141,000 as compensation to the complainant, Jabiru Mohammed.

The prosecution counsel, Karimu Bashiru, told the court that the case was reported by Mr Mohammed, who resides in Rayfield in Jos, at the Anglo Jos Police Station on December 14, 2021.

He said the convict, on December 7, 2021, by 1.00 p.m., in the company of two others at large broke into Mr Mohammed’s house and stole 10 litres of palm oil, one cartoon of pasta, a gas burner, a set of plates and spoons, a home theatre.

The police prosecutor said that the offence contravened sections 59,336 and 272 of the Plateau Penal Code Law.
