Nursing mother killed in Anambra building collapse
The police in Anambra on Sunday said a woman was killed and yet unknown number of people feared trapped after a building caved in near Onitsha, the state’s commercial hub.
The woman’s six-month-old child survived the incident and was pulled from the wreckage Sunday afternoon, police said. The News Agency of Nigeria said the woman’s identity was yet to be determined as of Sunday night, but officials suggested she was in her 40s.
Haruna Mohammed, Anambra police spokesperson said the collapse occurred at about 4:00 p.m. Efforts were underway to rescue those feared trapped in the rubble, police said.
The incident, which occurred in Umuota area of Obosi township, came barely a few months after five people were killed and many wounded in a four-storey building that collapsed in Anambra State in May.
Governor Willie Obiano decried the disaster as unfortunate at the time and vowed to forestall a recurrence under his leadership. A spokesperson for the governor did not immediately return a request seeking comments about why the state was yet to disclose findings of its investigation into the May incident.
