North Macedonia elects new prime minister

North Macedonian Parliament has voted for a new coalition government, with Dimitar Kovacevski, leader of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM), elected as the new prime minister.
National media reported on Monday that on December 30, 2020, North Macedonian President Stevo Pendarovski nominated Mr Kovacevski as a prime minister, giving him the mandate to form a new cabinet.
According to the Macedonian Information Agency, the new coalition cabinet headed by Mr Kovacevski was supported by 62 lawmakers of the 120-member Macedonian parliament, with 46 lawmakers voting against.
Mr Kovacevski previously said the key objective of his government would be to achieve “higher and more sustainable economic growth.”
He also pledged to address the country’s energy crisis and bring North Macedonia closer to the European Union.
Mr Kovacevski, appointed as deputy minister of finance after the 2021 parliamentary elections, succeeded Zoran Zaev, who resigned as prime minister on December 13, 2021, following the SDSM party’s defeat in municipal elections.
The leadership of the party then passed to 47-year-old Mr Kovacevski.
