Gombe to prevent Dowen College style bullying in schools: Commissioner

The Gombe state government says it has taken proactive measures to end bullying in all its public schools, to prevent a repeat of what’s happening in other schools across the country.
Dauda Batari, the state commissioner for Education, said in an interview in Gombe on Thursday that the measures were taken to protect the mental and psychological wellbeing of all students.
“I want to assure you that we will redouble efforts to ensure that what is happening in other states did not happen in Gombe,” Mr Batari said, adding that the state government would “protect children from external and internal aggression.”
Recall that Peoples Gazette had reported how a relative of 12-year-old deceased Sylvester Oromoni Jnr said his young cousin was badly bullied to death by five other students of Dowen College in Lagos, for his refusal to join them in a cult.
According to the Gomber commissioner, the state government has also taken measures to ensure the safety of students while in school.
“We have liaised with security operatives in the state as well as communities and traditional leaders to ensure the safety of the students,” he said.
Mr Batari added that the government was also working closely with the UNESCO, UNICEF and Japan on the safe school project.
