Lagosians more aggressive, uncooperative after #EndSARS protests: FRSC

“The motoring public are not cooperating with the security agencies and traffic management teams and this is a bad trend for us.”

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Saturday said the major challenge it faces in Lagos is that motorists have not been cooperating with security agents and traffic management team since the #EndSARS protests in October 2020.

“Lagos has become so aggressive after the ‘EndSars’ and this is the major headache we now have,” Olusegun Ogungbemide, the State Sector Commander, FRSC, said at an end-of-the-year party organised by the Badagry Unit of the Corps.

“The motoring public are not cooperating with the security agencies and traffic management teams and this is a bad trend for us,” Mr Ogungbemide added.

“So, I will only plead that irrespective of what they feel has gone wrong, we should bridge the gap.

“There should be trust between the society and the security agencies, to reduce the level of aggression,” he said.

Mr Ogungbemide also disclosed that over 100 deaths were recorded in Lagos road crashes, with commercial vehicles constituting the larger percentage.

“For enforcement in 2022, we are going to emphasise more on commercial vehicles, because we had a reduction in the rate of crashes on Lagos roads, but more deaths.

“This means that more commercial vehicles were involved, so we are going to refocus our attention on commercial vehicles.

“So, this year, there will be more enforcement, more advocacy and more interface with other security agencies,” Mr Ogungbemide said.

He added that over 60,000 traffic offenders were arrested on Lagos roads, between January and December, 2021.
