Statutory Adamawa delegates to the February 26 national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have promised to support Salihu Mustapha’s bid to become the ruling party’s national chairman.

The statutory delegates include serving and former Adamawa lawmakers, who pledged during a courtesy visit to the aspirant at his campaign headquarters in Abuja.

Dapo Okubanjo, Mr Mustapha’s media aide, announced this in a statement.

Led by Umar Yapak (APC, Verre), the Adamawa lawmakers said they decided to support him because they regarded Mr Mustapha as a unifier based on his antecedents.

“We have heard about how, as deputy national chairman of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), you were fair to all in terms of choice of party candidates,” they noted. “We also know that you will use your experience in party administration and your age to act as a bridge between the old and young generations of APC members.”

According to the statement, the lawmakers also promised to speak to their colleagues from Gombe and Taraba, with whom they collaborated in the past on matters of mutual interests, to support Mr Mustapha’s bid.

Mr Mustapha, the Turaki of Ilorin, assured the delegates that he would not disappoint them.

“I won’t take this gesture, from you distinguished personalities, for granted, especially as you counted me worthy for endorsement among the strong list of contenders for the position,” he said. “Let me assure you that on my watch, the party leadership will ensure that consultations are done on a regular basis with stakeholders across the board.”
