Poland withdraws from World Cup playoff with Russia amidst Ukraine occupation

Poland has withdrawn from World Cup playoff against Russia following Moscow’s ongoing hostilities against Ukraine.
“No more words, time to act! Due to the escalation of the aggression of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine, the Polish national team does not intend to play the play-off match against Russia,” Polish Football Association spokesperson, Cezary Kulesza said.
Mr Kuleza disclosed this via his official Twitter handle on Saturday morning, adding that PFA is in talked with FIFA on their decision.
“This is the only right decision. We are in talks with the and federations to present a common position to FIFA,” Mr Kuleza said.
This comes as another blow among sanctions targeted at Russia for the invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier on Friday, the Executive Committee of UEFA moved the final of the 2022 Champions League from St Petersburg to Paris, while Manchester United ended its sponsorship deal with Russian airline Aeroflot amid Russia’s ongoing hostilities against Ukraine.
Members of the British parliament are also proposing to ban Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich from ownership of his club Chelsea FC.
