Leeds sack Marcelo Bielsa

English Premier League side Leeds United have sacked manager, Marcelo Bielsa, following a poor run of form.

Club chairman Andrea Radrizzani said that sacking Bielsa was the “toughest decision” he has had to make, but that it was inevitable as they try to retain their Premier League status.

In a statement released via the club’s website, he said,

“With Marcelo as our head coach, we had three incredible campaigns and the good times returned to Elland Road. He changed the culture of the club and brought a winning mentality to us all.

“However, I have to act in the best interest of the club and I believe a change is required now in order to secure our Premier League status.”

Bielsa joined Leeds in 2018 whilst they were in the Championship, helping them gain promotion back into the Premier league in 2020 for the first time in 16 years. He also guided the club to a ninth place finish in the Premier League.

On Saturday, Leeds suffered a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Tottenham Hotspurs, compounding their woes. He leaves with the club on a run of five defeats in six games and sitting just two points above the drop zone.

The club has conceded 21 goals in that bad run, with 60 goals conceded in total after 26 games, a worse record than Norwich City who sit bottom of the league.

Leeds plan to stage a permanent tribute to Bielsa at Elland Road and hope to announce a new manager at the beginning of the new week.
