NANS storms Abuja to protest ASUU strike
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) held a protest against the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday.
The demonstration which was held at Unity Fountain, Abuja was led by NANS president, Sunday Asefon.
Displaying banners and placards with different inscriptions, the student body lamented persistent strikes by the university lecturers. They appealed to ASUU to shelve the industrial action to enable students to return to classes and finish their courses.
Also on Monday, Zone B chapter of NANS held a protest in Ibadan where they threatened to “go violent” from Tuesday if the federal government does not resolve issues with ASUU.
ASUU commenced a one-month warning strike on February 15 to press home their demands for better working conditions.
In March 2020, the union embarked on a nine-month strike over demands for improved remuneration and working conditions.
The strike was called off after the government promised to meet the striking lecturers’ demands in December 2020.
Part of the union’s strike agitation was its exemption from the enrollment of the IPPIS.
