Niger Gov. Bello takes over APC, Buni out

Niger governor, Abubakar Bello, is set to take over as the Chairman of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee for the All Progressive Congress.
Mr Bello arrived at the National Headquarters of the APC on Monday to hold an emergency meeting with some members of the caretaker committee of the party.
“I am currently presiding over the Caretaker/Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee of the APC at the National Secretariat of the Party,” Mr Bello tweeted on Monday.
At the time of filing this report, it is unclear whether or not Mr Bello will be taking over the position as a caretaker team leader or sole administrator.
The meeting is to implement President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to remove the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, as the chairman of the ruling party’s caretaker committee.
Mr Buni’s removal follows President Buhari reportedly giving the approval after a group of APC governors complained to him that Mr Buni was not inclined to holding the March 26 National Convention.
Both Mr Buhari and Mr Buni are out of the country receiving medical attention.
Mr Buni took leadership of the party in June 2020 after the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee was dismissed.
The political party, through its CECPC Secretary Senator James Akpan Udohedehe, had dismissed the removal of Mr Buni as fake news.
Earlier, the National secretariat of the party was surrounded by officers of the Nigeria Police Force and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
