Hungary has offered foreign students, including in Ukraine, the chance to continue their education at Hungarian universities in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Many Nigerians fleeing war-ravaged Ukraine are students.

Attila Demkó, the head of Hungary’s Centre for Geopolitics, tweeted on Sunday,

“Hungary is offering foreign students who escaped #UkraineRussianWar (India, Nigeria, other African countries) to continue their studies at Hungarian universities,” Mr Demkó said in a tweet. “All third-country refugees (mostly Africans) were accepted without problems and repatriated if they wished so.”

Nigerian citizens fleeing the conflict in Ukraine were evacuated by chartered flights provided by the Nigerian government, according to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).

The Nigerians were evacuated in three batches. The first batch of 450 Nigerians stranded in Ukraine returned home from Romania through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

On Friday, the second batch of evacuees arrived from Poland, and the third batch landed in Abuja from Hungary. The evacuated citizens were given $100 (about 48,000) each on Friday by the federal government.

At least 807 Nigerians from Ukraine had been evacuated by the government. The regime intends to evacuate more civilians from several Ukrainian cities under Moscow’s siege, such as the capital city of Kyiv and Sumy.
