Police seize 209 parcels of Indian hemp in Yobe

The Police Command in Yobe says it has confiscated 209 parcels of Indian hemp at Alimarami in Damaturu Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesman, ASP Dungus Abdulkarim, told reporters in Damaturu that the confiscation occurred at about 11:40 p.m. on Thursday.
He said that the illicit drug was recovered from an isolated building in the area.
A joint patrol team, led by the Division Police Officer (DPO), ‘B’ Division, cordoned off and searched an isolated building at Alimarami ward, Damaturu, where 209 parcels of weeds, suspected to be Indian hemp, were recovered.
“However, the owner of the house, who fled on noticing the presence of the police personnel, is being trailed and will be arrested in no distant time and prosecuted,” he said.
Mr Abdulkarim said that the illicit drug would be handed over to National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for analysis and custody.
The spokesman cautioned residents, especially youths, against drug abuse which, he said, was the leading cause of violent crimes.
“It is important to remind the general public of the negative effect drugs and other substance abuse pose to human health apart from promoting crime and criminality, particularly in North-East Nigeria.
He said that the command was concerned with the unwholesome development and, therefore, decided to crack down on drug peddlers in the state.
